Oysters are, without a doubt, the most famous of Hiroshima's seafood dishes. Additionally, winter is the season when oysters are at their most delicious. There are many events held all throughout Hiroshima Prefecture that involve eating oysters, but the Miyajima Oyster Festival was the first oyster event to gain traction as a proper festival.

The waters around Miyajima have many flourishing oyster farms, and the oysters produced here have become a popular brand, renowned especially for their above-average size, tenderness and juiciness. The Miyajima Oyster Festival is held over two days of the weekend in early February each year. As it is held right in front of Miyajima Pier, visitors stepping off the ferry are sure to be lured over to the festival grounds by the fragrant aroma of fried oysters. In addition to the standard fried oysters, other oyster dishes prepared and served within the bustling festival grounds include oyster okonomiyaki, Hiroshima's own soul food topped with oysters, as well as oyster dote nabe (hot pots), which goes very well with miso, and hot oyster stew--perfect for sipping to warm you up in the cold of winter--and much more.

All of the dishes are on sale cheap, so you can enjoy many different kinds of oyster dishes all at once. There is also a direct sales corner, where you can see many Hiroshima locals who come to buy fresh oysters from the day's catch. By all means, pay a visit to the Miyajima Oyster Festival for a taste of winter in Hiroshima.
