This ancient temple is said to have been founded by Ryokai - a Buddhist monk of the Shingon sect who was in charge of maintaining Itsukushima Shrine. It contains many important cultural properties and historic archives. In addition, the statue of the goddess Sarasvati enshrined in the temple is one of the three major Sarasvatis in Japan.
