This old temple is said to have been founded by Ryokai, a Buddhist monk who belonged to the Mt. Koya sect of the Shingon sect, and was in charge of repairing and building Itsukushima Shrine. It contains many important cultural properties and archives. In addition, a Sarasvati is enshrined in the temple and is known to be one of the three major Sarasvatis in Japan.
