In 1986, after a big renovation project, the museum reopened with modern amenities and an aesthetic balance with the famous Shukkei-en Gardens next door. The museum exhibits artworks associated with Hiroshima prefecture, Japanese and Asian art and craft, as well as other displays concentrating on work created in the 1920s and 30s. The museum has over 3500 pieces in its permanent collection.
