Visit "Itsukushima Shrine"

Miyajima Island has been worshipped since ancient times as "the island where God dwells". Being one of the three best views in Japan, "Aki no Miyajima" is widely known. Itsukushima Shrine, standing against beautiful green background of Miyajima, was designated as World Heritage site in 1996. Floating shrine buildings and vermillion colored torii gate are bold and exquisite, worthy of its position as one of the best shrines in Japan. Itsukushima Shrine was built as it looks today in 12th century by Taira no Kiyomori. 16-meter-high vermillion lacquered torii gate (Important Cultural Property) is one of three major toriis in Japan. (Taste of winter) "Oyster cuisine"

Oyster farming in Hiroshima has 450 years of history and today Hiroshima boasts top oyster catches nationwide. Cultivated with mild climate and calm Seto Inland Sea, Hiroshima oysters are fat and have thick taste. They are cultivated at coastal area and islands of the whole Hiroshima Bay, including, as you can imagine, at Miyajima. Oysters come into season from November to March. In February Miyajima Oyster Festival is held every year. Near Itsukushima Shrine there are a lot of restaurants which serve various oyster dishes such as oyster hot pot, vinegared fresh oysters, grilled oysters with a shell, and deep fried oysters. Please enjoy this season specialty of Hiroshima at Miyajima which is known for delicious oysters. Click to see the detail.
